about me
Gerrie Starreveld
The 'about me' section is a work in progress, just as I am on a journey of discovery every day. Right now, I'm back in a position to fully focus on the arts, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Born in Amsterdam and raised in the spaciousness of the northern part of Groningen, both in terms of mentality and the expansive views offered by the Groningen landscape. I love creating space and working on location. My background is broad. I'm a true generalist, and that's only becoming more important because I love innovation, new materials, and exploring possibilities.
This has shaped my specific perspective and working methods in my freelance and commissioned work, and has often led to my involvement in the design phase and execution of construction projects. I've found this very rewarding when mentoring and coaching students at Mediacollege. Listening carefully, identifying students' individual potential, and helping them along the way has been incredibly rewarding. This broad foundation has also proven invaluable when guiding cultural trips both domestically and internationally.
I feel privileged to do everything I can and undertake, and I think I have a fantastic profession. Over the years, I've worked with a wide variety of people. Of course, sometimes it went better than others, but overall, I look back on it fondly. In sometimes very stressful situations, we often had a lot of fun and achieved great things together. There's often a humorous side to many situations, and I enjoy seeking that out. For me, thinking in terms of possibilities, solutions, and what can be done is a meaningful way of life. That's how I live and work.
I work interdisciplinary, in varying locations both domestically and internationally. Devising and executing associative concepts and art projects, sometimes with multiple partners, and finding a wide variety of solutions, is a constant in my life. This is always on, and I do it with great enthusiasm. I hope my work inspires, opens an unexpected window, brings joy, new insights, or beauty. Creating certainly does.
As an artist, I find it perfectly logical to challenge the status quo, to think outside the box, and to explore different perspectives by constantly seeking wonder and space. I love it, and I can do it. That's my role.
More of my work can be seen under the heading 'projects'.

"We got a touch of Gerrie" with the emphasis on touch... We certainly had fun, but I'll leave it up to them whether they learned anything about web design.
At the picture.
That was made by one of my students at Media College. It was an animation that moved in slow motion. Very funny and well-timed!
