the murals in the north and south Jordan

On a bike ride I ended up in the Elandstraat. In 1998 I made a mural behind the community center Ons Genoegen that turned out to still be there, although the entire square is now overgrown with greenery and all kinds of play opportunities have been created for children. There is a large net hanging in front of the mural that has become a kind of fresco after all these years.

Next to the community center is a school and during the discussions about the design it turned out that the children wanted something with a pirate ship. The design is based on that, with an uninhabited island, a pirate ship, a message in the bottle, a lighthouse and a musical staff with 'bij ons in de jordaan'. The fanfare of Ons Genoegen provided a festive opening at the time.

While I was there, a few mothers were sitting on the square and one of them said: "That mural, whole generations grew up with that". Funny to hear. That's not something you think about when you're standing there painting.

In the Noord Jordaan between the Anjelierstraat and the Tuinstraat, all the way in the back is another mural in the playground de Slootstraat. I made this in 1996. The inner area was due for a makeover and a mural was made.
For this I used motifs from the area, such as the Amsterdam frog.
The inner courtyard is beautifully overgrown after all these years and is a sheltered play area for small children. There is also a chicken run with beautiful chickens and two giant rabbits. The playground is maintained by local residents and looks great. So if you ever want to spend an afternoon outside with small children, take a look at the Slootstraat.
